wow that's an intro here's an intro thatis an introum yeah so welcome along to our newmonthly feature this is monsters ofFallout 76.and each episode we are going to betalking about different monster that'sin the computer game Fallout 76 which isbased oncreatures that we've talked about beforeor that we haven't talked about beforeas well and this first episode revolvesaround Mothman so Mothman is a characterin The Fallout 76 gameand we're going to talk about this eachepisode and the different monster that'sin this gameyeah exactly so Fallout 76 particularlyis one of my like all time favoritegames we've got quite a lot of stickand it came out and it saw those but ohyeah [ __ ] the haters I ain't even playeditI've seen it but I've never played itit's amazing it's amazing and like likeGreg said there's it's based in WestVirginiain the athlete Appalachia where we knowthere's lots offamous sort of paranormal caseslike the man I'm gonna talk about yeahhuge episodes gonna be talking about theGrafton monster the case that was uhfeatured in Project Blue Book as wellthe flat was monsterall sort of real cases from around WestVirginia and the surrounding states inAppalachia and these monitors that arefeatured in Fallout 76 is enemiessometimes as friends but your featureand again it's what we could sort oftalk about the monsterand how it's portrayed in the gameand then sort of then look at the actualstory behindeach of these before that yeah prettycool thing to dodefinitely so we actually talked aboutMothman in our second ever episodethe second it was the second everepisode I remember it was an early onewow so it's time to revisit definitelyoverdue in fact just over two years agomental do our aliens in the Falloutgames in all all the games are soon likesort of alien or UFOfeature and that's that's why I like itas well becauseUFOs and aliens but I'm not based onanything likeactual event is just like well ingeneral yeah about them in this seriesbut we will be talking aboutthe other once the so let's crack on thefirst episode is mathmansuperso in the game there are a number ofdifferentversions of manual at different namesthat the you can come across okay it'sthe wise buffman which is friendlyfriendly muffman and he imparts hiswisdom into your character give me likea character like a bit of both bit ofintelligence some more benefits in gameand he had to summon him but this isinteresting as well by lighting up thelandlocked Lighthouse based on the realSomerville Lake Lighthouse oh wow whichis a landlocked Lighthouse so there'snowhere near waterit's a lighthousethat's weird let's win the game isliterally like on the side of themountainit's like obviously similar to how it isin real lifeSo based on the real Somerville LakeLighthouse which is built kind of a bitof result of a jokewhere there was thiscouple and you had a friend that wasbuilding wind turbines and he said ohSun's Up we send the wind turbinein the end he did end up sort ofusing the base of a wind turbinebuilt into a light up basically and hesort of came like a bit of a communitybudget where people sort of chipped insupplied things local like light Fitterscame and put the light in so it's kindof rotating like a lighthouse door soit's like a real working Lighthouse butyou know we're near the water oh and inthe water it's like a bit like a touristattraction so we've got a thing likethat in Oxford uh the shark I don't knowif you've if you've seen that so there'sa house in the center of Oxfordand uh you can Google it and there is asharkin the top of a house like pointing downso it's heads yeah yeahso nowhere near anywhere where a sharkwould be and it's randomlyin the roof butyeah so you have to light up this lighton this Lighthouse and that summons whyis Mothmaneven it gives you his sort of wisdomyeah okay that's cool that's cooland we've got the stalking muffmanobviously vengeful muffmanand a glowing Moth Man it's obviously nuclear war is basis of the Fallout games yes Fallout 76 is set oh my God I'mgonna get this right now sound like anoob 25 years after the bombs went offNoob still relatively because the otherfart games are set like 100 years aftershort pump's gone off the 76 is like 2525 years after so everyone's still quitefresh and yeah Green so like sort ofnew whereas in the other games it'squite like Bland there's no vegetationor anything it's all been sort of gonewhat 12 76 is greatwell then so a lot of creatures are likeglowing because they're irradiateda lot of radiation and stuff that givesthem like different different powers andstuff as well so what I'll commit to Ashbecause as we talked about offline I'venot actually played this game at all Iknow nothing about Fallout 76 so mycommitment is that by the next episodethat we doI'll be playing itcool I'll give it a go Xbox rules goodgoodmost the variants of the Mothman arequite aggressive the stalking Mothmankind of just follows you so it's thatgreat because you're just like sort ofsee these glowing eyes sort of in thedistance or you'll hear the noise youthink that there's somewhere near me andyou just like sort of they're justwatching youyeah but you attack him he will likedefend umoh yeahyeah I'm just I'm just yeah I'm justpulling it up as well so yeah I can seethere he's not aggressive but I willdefend himself when he's attacked and itlooks bloody creepyand I say he's just kind of like shockwaves from his like vibrations to sortof so like a shock wave at you knowthat's like how he attacks and he likezipsI'm like teleports almost like from partto part so does this page don't reallyuse any pop-up behind youwhy are you trying to Charlie Charlieum yeah and in the game most of theplayers in the game are based on realreal places and it's Marcus people haveobviously gone to West Virginia and tookphotos of the actual towns but thousandgames based on okay yeah yeah I've seenhim reveal on this place in the gamecalled Point Pleasantwhich we'll come on to a bit later yeahyeah and that's where sort ofthat has the muffler Museum which isthenstatues identical to the one that's inthe real Point Pleasantand so on the people that well the sortof characters that live in that PointPleasant are called cultists and they'relike Mothman cultists thatum obviously I believe in the muffin manyeah the shrine to it and the attackanyway that comes into Point Pleasantbecause I don't want anyone else it'snot coming into their spacehave I not played this game before I'veseen it I've seen the game but yeah soespecially 76 rather sort of paranormalstories and stuff it really really doesa good job of which you'll find out overthe next few months when we talk abouteach one yeah definitely so that's kindofit's not really a main catch in the gamebut it's quite aprominent characters since you'll alwaysbe there pops up then thereabouts that'skind of howportrayed in the game yeahso I guess now we'll talk about thethe legend the real stories behind theMothman yeah so Mothman is is somethingthat I had heard of a long time agoum because sort of my like as we'vetalked about previous like my journeyintoparanormal and all that kind of stuffstarted quite a long time ago and then Isort of fell outof not interest butother things to get life gets in a wayand then I've sort of Revisited it it'sa Mothman was actually a storyor a legend or whatever you want to callit that I'd I'd heard ofand culminated in me readingthe book The Mothman Prophecies which isa great book actually I really enjoyedreading that and then I watched the filmumwhich was of the same name uh andstarred Richard Gere in 2002. not sogreat the book was definitely betterthan the filmumbutit was all good it's all good so as ashe said the Mothman it comes from PointPleasant in West Virginiaum and it's like a folkloreumof this humanoid creature it's got Wingsit's got glowing red eyes and glowingred eyes seem to be the sort of the mainit's a calling card as it wereum of the Mothmanandumbasicallythere was some gravediggers thatreportedum citing when they were digging someGravesumin November 66 they were they thoughtthey spotted something he glanced upsomething that was sort of flyingoverheadand it appeared to be a massive figurethat was moving rapidly from tree totree and the the gravediggers laterdescribed it as like a brown human beingso real darkumuh and they were the first sort of majorsort of sighting of itum it would become known as a Mothman because it looked like a winged humanumbut it was always something thatremained elusive there was never reallyanysort ofthere's no video of it there's nocameras and back in the 60s you didn'treally have people didn't carry aroundcameras and they only sort ofumit was only for a sort of certaintime it was like over the course ofabout a year or so between 66 and 67that the Mothman really sort of thesightings intensifiedum and it was all around Point Pleasantumafter these guys had their initialreportthere was a two couples that noticed awhite winged creature which was aboutsix or seven feet tall standing in frontof the car that they're all sitting inum a bit freaky but they again said thatthe beast at about had like red eyesabout six inches apart and a hugewingspan of about 10 feetum and the apparent urge to avoid thebright headlights of the car which iswhere this sort of dark fear comes frombecause nobody had really seen itwith any kind ofLighting on itso according to other Witnesses preach was able to fly at incrediblespeedssome say up to about 100 miles an hourand all of them agreed that the Beastwas quite clumsy when it was running onthe groundso it was always sort of seen up in theair and it was a bit clunky walkingaround and if you see saw some of thepictures and the the size of this thingthis thing walking around with huge wings on its back it's it's going to be quitetop heavy I would imagine yes I saw oneof these groups love it it's like aslendum muscular man about seven feettall with like large white Wings justimagine just seeing that justyeahabsolutely piss your pants on you ohwood and the statue if you see thestatue and you could you can Google thestatue uh because like you say in Point Pleasant there is actually they've sortof embraced Mothmanumandit looks horrific if that's what peopleare seeingumis horrible horrible thingumbut more and more science were reportedin The Point Pleasant area over the sortof the Year between 66 and 67 and that'swhen this Legend took a bit more shapeum they reckoned there was eightadditional sightings in the short spaceof three days after the first claimsincluding two firefighters who said sortsaid that they saw a very large birdwith large red eyes and if you look atagain if you Google the picture andGoogle the image there's like a classicimage of Mothman this big black winged creature with glow and red eyes and youcould mistake it for like a huge birdbut the things like a pterodactyl sizething is huge absolutely hugeand then people having sort of dreamsand premonitions of like an impendingindependent Doom yeah strange and alsobelieve some well some people claim tohave like strange phone calls and visitsfrom the Men in Black yeah and thingslike thatnice never find out my friendssobasically the this became Legend veryquicklyum and locals became convinced that theywere seeing the Mothman in birds andother large animalseven long after there was like it'spranks to her that they thought was waspulling out the jokesumbut it's worth knowing that the Mothman Legend Bears some resemblance to severaldemon archetypes found among thosewho've experienced sleep paralysis andlike you mentioned people have been beenum dreaming about air and having visionsum so some people have sort of suggestedthat Mothman is actually just like ahuman fear and this Legend's born out ofthe fact that somebody thinks they sinsomething and as you know in certainplaces we we've had cases that we'vetalked about where people have like amass Hysteriaand I'm not saying this is mass Hysteriabutpeople can almost be talked intoseeing something that's not there andthey convince themselves that whatthey're seeing isMothman so they see two red eyes and itcould be a deer or or somethingpotentiallyI'm not saying that's what it was butin a dark of night and you've seen thesered eyes glowing it could be a wolf itcould be anything and people are like[ __ ] there's Mothman and thenthey'll go oh we saw Mothman last nightand then the next night somebody else isin it and then over the course of ashort period of time this this Legendhas developedumso who knows if it if it's reallylike properly up there and and truehoweverumthere was an issue with the SilverBridgeso Silver Bridge was constructed in 1928and connected Point Pleasant and kanugain Ohioand the name was credited to it aluminumfor American references out therecolored paint that was usednow on the 15th of December 1967 duringrush hour the bridge collapsed and thebridge resulted in 31 vehicles fallinginto the river killing 46 people andinjury nine which is unusual for abridge to collapsebut people believethat it was Mothman who caused thedisasterso it's one of those enduring Mysteriesnow which is there's a sign up that saysthat the Silver Bridge collapsedumand people were saying thatis basicallythe only thing that could have happenedbecause there was this foreboding wasthat Mothman had actually caused thebridge collapse because there wasMothman sightings in the the precedingdays so the bridge collapse followed uhsightings of the Mothman and it wasn'tlong before people started to connectboth from Mothmansightings and the bridge collapse andput two and two together and come upwith five potentiallyumbut John Keel the author of my fanprocesses conflated that the Mothmanscience and the bridge disaster wereconnected he also Incorporated UFOactivity and his story took hold and thetown soon became iconic amongst manyconspiracy theorists ufologists and fansof the Paranormalum Point Pleasant now is known for theMothman Legendum and decades later it's stilllike an ongoing and enduring kind ofumsort of homage to to what happened backin the 60s and as we mentioned right atthe start in 2002 theum the film based on the bookcalled Mothman Prophecies Richard Gereplays a a reporter basically who seemsto have witnessed the Mothman shortlybeforeum sorry whose wife seems to havewitnessed them off man shortly beforeher death and he gets all sucked into itum and tries to figure out what the Mothman is now I've watched the filmI've read the bookandthe book was so much better than thefilm the film wasnot great I'll be honest with youumbut yeah it's it's it's one of thoseones that's like we talkedaboutum moment of contact and down in uhSouth America in the town they it's alldedicated they've got UFO statue up andthey've really embraced it now Point Pleasant have fully embraced Mothman whojust crazy they've got like youmentioned they've got a museum they havelike Mothman days and parades and allthat kind of stuff and it's like theweirdestthing I can't even imagine in the UK unless I've missed something I can'timagine us doing something like thatyeah she's rolling oh we do have cheeserolling down the hill that's that'sfairly close close to me in Gloucesterthat's [ __ ] mental if you you seethem it's justpeople breaking their legs and all sortsand they win the cheese that's it it'slike you've done all of that to win somecheesebut yeahwe don't we don't sort of celebrate uhan urban and Legend do we really evenlike the big cases like I I when I wentto Randall show like yeah absolutelynothingI went to like the town of Industryand I went to the shops I was askingpeople it's like yeah nothing like apartfrom the little Trail it's just it'sbasically a little signpost that youfollow around the forest that's itthere's nothing at all to say we've gotone of the biggest well-known cases inthe world yeah it was really good at the Roswell Festival that's what everything that goes on overthere rendition we're not quite on thesame scale but still one of the topcases like well knows about it and youhave nothing it's literally it's insaneandwhere we've done the episode onum rendersham and like the historythat's there so it's not as even if itwas just like those few nights in 1980it's like going back 900000 years in that particular area andthey're still maybe that's just aBritish thingdon't talk about that kind of stuff herewe don't talk about that but yeah soit's good to see that they embrace itand it obviously attracts peopleum to go to the festivals and and evensee in the statues so yeah end up invideo gamesand ended up in video games you knowyou've made it when you become acharacter in a video gameokay that'd be cool I did findokay because I was working so if there'sanything more sort of recently becauseI've been out of some sightings in the2000s and stuff there's a couple ofyeah I just found one uh from GeorgiainMiddle East I guess isn't that theMiddle East new Russiaokay yeah yeahand they're not newspaper calledanother butchered the name it's in uhRussian I thinkyeahyeahin Moscowforeshadowed 1999 Russian apartmentbombings which killed more than 300people wow so it's that kind ofscene sightings around and thensomethingtragic event happens yeah that's that'sweird that is weirdthat there's a book in 1970before John Gill's book from a grayBarker called Silver Bridgeand that mentions among sort of thingsthat the the Mothman or Birdman whovisited like the area around PointPleasant and stuff yeah 1866.and he like mentioned earliest sort oflike the psychological psychologicalside of it where he sort of talks tolocal residents and how they sort ofdealt with it beforeand after that the bridge collapse andsort of why people felt the way they didand why they sort ofI guesswhen things happen people do try andlook Francis and yes if that's sort ofwhat you come to absolutely somethingthat people to grab onto yeah I supposeit gives some kind ofespecially if it's just like a tragicaccident and there is no explanationand there's been this kind of urbanlegend around before itI can imagine it's quiteI don't know what the right word is butit's kind of likeit's easier to say that something'scaused it than to not know what it'sbeen caused at all and not have anyanswers so you kind ofyou're kind of get in some kind of sayclosure that's not the right word butto be able to blame something for atragic accident yeah it's definitelyit's all you always when there'saccidents you're always looking forsomebody to blame or something must havehappened to cause this rather than itjust be a Treasure Coast and and umwhat better than Mothmanthis mysterious creature thatnobody's really got solid evidence ofum and it fits the bill quite nicelyyeah and you would [ __ ] your pantsoh Christ yeahyeah absolutely especially if I just seethese glowing red arties that'd beenough to freak me out anyway and thenjust sort of see them going up in theairI'll be like [ __ ] Jesus Christbutcool so yeah we
